FOTOKIKLOSI S.A. is a collective scheme approved by the
Hellenic Recycling Agency of the Greek Ministry of Environment
and Energy, that organises, operates, and controls the collective
scheme for the alternative management of the Waste of
Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) in Greece.

Services

Some Unique
Characteristics

FOTOKIKLOSI S.A. is authorized to manage all types of Electrical and Electronic equipment, such as large household appliances, monitors, technology products, lamps, lighting fixtures, gadgets, photovoltaic panels etc, without any exception.

FOTOKIKLOSI S.A. is the only Collective Scheme in Greece, that has undertaken the task of recycling Photovoltaic Panels in our country. The first collection took place in May 2021 and 36 tons of Photovoltaic panel waste were received for recycling.

The dramatic reduction in the cost of new photovoltaic panels in the last decade, combined with the higher efficiency per photovoltaic panel, pushes investors to replace the old photovoltaic panels in a shorter period of time than estimated in the initial studies.

FOTOKIKLOSI

A Collective Scheme of Alternative Management of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment in Greece, approved by the Hellenic Recycling Agency of the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy.

How do we recycle?

Collection Points

We place separately the burnt lamps, light fixtures, and the old electrical appliances, in the special recycling bins, which are located all over the country, in designated collection points.

Collection / Transport / Temporary Storage

When the bins are full, they are picked up by authorized carriers, forwarded to respective Sorting / Processing / Recycling Units or taken to temporary storage units.

Recycling, Recovery & Preparation for Reuse

In the Units, depending on their capacity, tasks are carried out, sorting, preparation for reuse, recovery and recycling, depending on the type of waste in order to return to the market.

Frequently Asked Questions

FOTOKIKLOSI S.A. is a collective scheme of alternative waste management of Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) approved by the Hellenic Recycling Agency (HRA), organised and supported by companies in the Electrical – Electronic Equipment sector (EEE).

WEEE stands for Waste from electric and electrical devices that are plugged in or powered by batteries, including light bulbs and photovoltaic panels, when they reach the end of their life.

You may find in detail the devices that you can recycle here.

Those who manufacture or import products of Electrical and Electronic Equipment and place them in the Greek market in any way (sale, leasing, free, etc.). They are also obliged to pay a monetary contribution to the Scheme for each EEE product they place on the Greek Market according to their weight, so that when this product reaches the end of its life cycle, it can be managed in the best way environmentally.

For the collection of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, we have developed collection points with Municipalities, Public Services, Organisations, Universities, Businesses. For the transport of WEEE that we collect we have collaborations with specially licensed transport companies, as well as for their recycling with standard EEE waste treatment plants.

Because most electrical appliances and especially light bulbs contain harmful materials such as plastic, mercury, cadmium, etc., which should not end up in the environment. They also contain materials (ferrous & non-ferrous metals, etc.), which can be used to manufacture other products.

All types of Electrical & Electronic Equipment are recycled and from their materials are obtained ferrous metals, copper, aluminum, glass, plastic, etc. which are reused to a very large extent. The resulting products are promoted to specially licensed companies for further processing, and return to the market, contributing to the Circular Economy, the protection of the environment and the conservation of natural resources. The lamps in particular are recycled, and from their materials result glass – metals – fluorescent powder – mercury, etc. Which after processing and cleaning are reused to a very large extent. The resulting products are forwarded to specially licensed companies for further processing.

The electrical & electronic items you want to dispose of can be delivered to one of the thousands of collection points in our scheme. FOTOKIKLOSI S.A. first enhances the awareness of citizens in this environmental protection and it is at your disposal.

The NPR is an organised Register scheme in which all Producers are registered, who must have a corresponding Registration Number for the legal exercise of their activity and for the monitoring of the recycling obligations by the competent authorities.

According to JMD 23615/651/Ε.103/2014, Electrical and Electronic Equipment is defined as:

“Equipment whose proper operation depends on electric currents or electromagnetic fields and equipment for the production, transmission and measurement of currents and fields thereof, designed to operate at a rated voltage of up to 1000 V AC or up to 1500 V DC. The concept of EEE includes all its components, assembled parts and consumables, which form part of the product when it is placed on the market.”

The categories of EEE according to JMD 23615/651/Ε.103/2014 are the following:

  1. Heat exchange equipment
  2. Monitors and equipment containing screens larger than 100 cm2
  3. Lamps
  4. Large equipment (any external dimension greater than 50 cm) including (not exclusively) the following: Home appliances, computer and telecommunications equipment, consumer goods, lighting, sound and video reproduction equipment, music equipment, electric and electronic instruments, amusement and sports equipment and toys, medical devices, monitoring and control apparatus, automatic dispensers, electrical equipment currents. This category does not include equipment in categories 1 to 3.
  5. Small equipment (no external dimensions larger than 50 cm) including (not exclusively) the following: Home appliances, consumer goods, lighting, sound and video reproduction equipment, music equipment, electrical and electronic instruments, toys and entertainment and sports equipment, medical devices, monitoring and control instruments, automatic dispensers, power supply equipment. This category does not include equipment in categories 1 to 3 and 6.
  6. Small IT and telecommunications equipment (no external dimensions larger than 50 cm).

Alternative management of WEEE according to Law 2939/01 and JMD 23615/651/E.103/2014 are all activities of collection, transfer, transshipment, temporary storage, reuse and processing, recycling or recovery of energy, for the purpose of utilization of WEEE and return to market current.

The proper operation of collective schemes of alternative management of WEEE is judged annually by HRA by achieving specific quantitative collection targets, as well as recycling or recovery. More specifically, FOTOKIKLOSI S.A., based on its license, must achieve the following annual environmental objectives:

  • To collect the quantity at the expense of 65% of the average of the quantities placed on the market by the obligated producers in the previous three years.
  • To organise the work of alternative management in order to achieve every year recycling targets and preparation for reuse between 55% and 85%, but also recovery targets between 75% and 85% by weight. The variation is based on the category in which the individual EEE Waste is included.

The Alternative Management Schemes are audited by the Hellenic Recycling Agency (HRA), the official body of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, in order to examine and determine the correct operation, as well as the achievement of their goals. At the same time, every year it is compiled and submitted to HRA the annual report of the Alternative Management Schemes in order to present in writing the detailed results of the environmental objectives and the achievement of the individual goals. The achievement of all objectives, as well as the viability of the Alternative Management Scheme leads to the renewal of its operating license by HRA, which is valid for six years.

The role of FOTOKIKLOSI S.A. is to organise and control the alternative management of WEEE. Organises all the above-mentioned alternative activities of EEE Waste Management, concluding contracts with properly licensed cooperating companies which undertake the implementation of these actions. At the same time, it undertakes the control and supervision of its collaborators in order to ensure the environmentally best practices for the implementation of the actions.
